A grote groep Hooglanders en toeristen vertrokken de Tatra hoofdstad Zakopane vanochtend op een pelgrimstocht naar Giewont. De trek is een drie uur durende wandeling, met een zeer gevaarlijke, rotsachtige stuk aan het einde van het parcours.
Een heilige mis zal worden gevierd op de top van de berg, op 1894 meter hoogte, om de 110e Verjaardag van de toewijding van de 15 meter hoge stalen Kruis te vieren.
Twee jaar geleden, zijn de funderingen versterkt en is de hele structuur schoongemaakt en bedekt met een anti-corrosie coating.
Giewont met haar silhouet doet denken aan een slapende ridder, de meest opvallende van de Tatra bergtoppen.
Een monument van architectuur, het wordt gepresenteerd op het wapen van de stad van Zakopane en is populair bij toeristen voor decennia, hoewel het gebied uiterst gevaarlijk, vooral tijdens onweer.
In een preek tijdens zijn bezoek aan de Zakopane in 1997, zei paus Johannes Paulus II bij de Giewont kruis deze woorden: "Ik dank God voor de mensen die dat Kruis nam naar de top van de berg. Dat kruis kijkt uit op het geheel van Polen, van de Tatra aan de Baltische kust. Dat kruis spreekt tot ons zeggen, 'Hef uw hart!' Ik bid dat alle Polen zal naar dat kruis kijken en die uitnodiging horen. "Laten wij onze harten verheffen!"

Peter Gentle 19.08.2011 07:21 A large group of highlanders and tourists left the Tatra capital of Zakopane this morning on a pilgrimage to Mount Giewont. The trek involves a three-hour hike, with a very hazardous, rocky stretch at the end of the trail.
A holy mass will be celebrated at the top of the mountain, at 1894 metres, to mark the 110th anniversary of the dedication of the 15 metre-high steel cross standing there.
Two years ago, its foundations were reinforced and the entire structure was cleaned and covered with an anti-corrosion coating.
With its silhouette reminiscent of a sleeping knight, Giewont is the most distinctive of the Tatra peaks.
A listed monument of architecture, it is featured on the coat-of-arms of the town of Zakopane and has been popular with tourists for decades, even though the area is extremely dangerous, particularly during thunderstorms.
In a homily during his visit to Zakopane in 1997, Pope John Paul II referred to the Giewont cross in these words: “I thank God for the people who took that cross to the peak of the mountain. That cross looks out on the whole of Poland, from the Tatras to the Baltic coast. That cross speaks to us saying, 'Lift up your hearts!' I pray that all of Poland will look toward that cross and hear that invitation. 'Let us lift up our hearts!”
